What Tools Should I Carry?

Even the most prepared Dualie occasionally gets a flat, has a mechanical failure from a fall or can get hurt. If its not you, then its your riding buddy so here are a few items that I have found useful. I carry all of these items and have used them or wished I had one and added it for the next trip. All this gear adds about 15 pounds but the alternative is worse, getting stranded.

Back Pack

  • Hydration system - 70 ounces minimum for drinking while riding.
  • Snacks - breakfast or energy bars, beef jerky, etc.
  • Emergency kit - emergency blanket, mirror, whistle, matches or lighter, water purifier, compass, emergency rations
  • First aid kit - bandages, aspirin, gauze, scissors, etc.
  • Extra water - or energy drink in case you run out.
  • Folding saw - and pruning shears (don’t laugh, these get used a lot)
  • Hat or cap - Sunscreen, Chapstick, sunglasses
  • Toilet Paper - (gets used more often than you think)

Front or Rear Fender Bags

  • Spare Tube - (a front tube works well & can be used on the back too)
  • Tire Irons - 2 or 3 wrapped in towel to protect tube
  • CO2 cartridges - and hand pump for when you run out of CO2
  • Tube patch kit - in case spare tube fails

Tool Belt or Fanny Pack

  • Wrenches - pliers, sockets, screwdriver, allen wrenches
  • Chain breaker - and spare links (multiple sizes)
  • Zip Ties - tow rope, bailing wire, safety wire
  • JB Weld - Locktite, electrical & duct tape
  • Fuses - miscellaneous nuts, screws and bolts
  • Clutch lever - always good to have a spare
  • Maps - insurance, $10 emergency cash

Spare Pockets

  • Wallet - ID, money, etc.
  • Digital camera - for all those photo opportunities
  • Small flashlight - and tape to mount on helmet just in case
  • Extra batteries- for camera, odometer, flashlight, GPS, etc.
  • Cell Phone (although it may most likely will not get service)

I’m sure there are more items I have missed but this will definitely give you an idea of what to bring and then you won’t be sad when you break down on the trail

Our next meeting is Thursday July 3
