INTRODUCTION TO DUAL SPORT RIDES

Dual sport rides are designed for OFF-ROAD motorcycles that are street-legal.

Preferred motorcycles are:

  • Off-road bikes that are converted to street legal
  • 4 -stroke
  • Have resettable odometers
  • Are lightweight
  • Come with electric start and a kick start back-up
  • Have oversized tanks for 100+ mile range
  • Are QUIET! - stealth is our friend

While the 450 cc is pretty much the standard, a few riders have selected 250 cc bikes too. A 525 cc or 650 cc is great if you ride the desert but can be harder to handle on forest roads and trails in the US Forests.

Once you decide on a bike, you will learn that these rides are a whole lot of fun and allow you to tour and view scenery which most people do not know exists. All dual-sport events are noncompetitive and consist of routes that are 80-90% dirt roads and trails. As a rule of thumb, the routes are 110 to 200 miles for a 1-day ride or 250 to 500 miles for a 2-day event. The mileage will vary depending on the terrain ridden such as desert or mountain or a combination of both such as the LA B to V.23170052

Be prepared to leave early (riding by 7:00 AM) and you should have some tools and understand how to use a roll chart to navigate.  Because the distance and your riding ability can vary, it is a good idea to ride as quick as possible in order to finish.

Rides will usually have optional “hard-ways” to to make the ride more challenging and to test your abilities. Some clubs offer plaques or awards for finishing all “hard-ways” which is a feat considering that only 25% of the entered riders will complete these loops. The biggest thing to understand is to ride to your abilities whether you enjoy the easy routes or the hard routes.
