Navigation

Finding your way on an organized ride is done with a roll chart and resettable odometer. Roll charts are provided at the sign up table and you tape it into a holder you purchase prior to the ride. Many riders also have a GPS unit to aid in navigation (but it is NOT to be used as a primary navigation aid)

You’ll want to take some time when you aren’t riding off road to learn how your GPS works and then you can start to see how it can aid you to insure you are on the right path

This is what you’ll see on a dualsport ride roll chart. Rides are broken down into sections of 10-25 miles and at the beginning of each section you reset your odometer. In the example to the left, you’ll start riding and at 1.10 miles, you should encounter a gate that you’ll ride through. Then at 2.6 miles, your going to make your first turn, a very hard left at what will probably be a tee intersection of some sort. You advance the roll chart to keep upcoming directions visible. Experienced riders can do this while rolling down the trail!!! If you need more detail on Rollcharts, click on the picture at the left.

For ease of use rollchart holders and GPS units tend to get mounted on the handlebars. If you have a crossbar this can be easier, but many riders have gotten creative on their mountings. Talk to other riders about their setups and see what works for them and ask what didn’t work for them so you don’t make their mistakes.

Rollcharts are normally coupled with ribbon of some sort. The picture at the right shows some of the difficulty in knowing where the trail leads. Most promoters will place ribbon at the trail in a situation like this. It’s just a 6” piece of colored ribbon probably clothes pinned to a bush or tree. When you pick up your roll chart, ask the promoter what color ribbon they are using.
